Program elements include the Future Town Bilingual Creative Circus, Future Town People’s Forum, and Future Town Creative Day of Service. These program frameworks are co-visioned, re-named, and co-planned with local artists, community leaders and organizations. The mission is to inspire ongoing cross-cultural community gatherings where residents can share stories, dreams, fears, and their talents, while having a damn good time! Of course, fresh locally-baked cookies and culturally celebrated food are features of our programs, along with childcare and language interpretation services.

Over 60% of rural youth live in “civic deserts”.

These are defined as places without opportunities for civic and political learning and engagement, and without institutions that typically provide opportunities like youth programming, arts and culture organizations, and religious congregationsLiving in a civic desert increases the likelihood of alienation (and with that a host of other civic issues including attraction to more extreme ideas).

And, whether we like it or not, young people grow up!

Future Town reimagines small towns

In the American West

positioning them in the future, rather than the past

When people think about and talk about innovation, they tend to focus on what is happening in big cities. Future Town seeks to change that, while increasing social cohesion across race, language, culture and geography.

In Rural areas of the country

colorado in particular

there are rising numbers of people of color.

Many of these folks are immigrants and refugees. In fact: Colorado is the fastest growing state for Black immigrants. There has been 400% growth from 2000 to 2019, much larger than the state’s general population growth of 34% over the same period. And many of these folks are migrating to suburban and rural areas. The cultural divides between long-time residents and newer residents are gigantic and growing rapidly and must be addressed now, respecting and celebrating long-established culture while embracing the new—with an eye toward the future that can be community controlled.

HEAL NEXT FEST
community, renewal, and regeneration

We gather in Future Town to grow our commitment to collective health. What does it mean to be healthy in mind, body, spirit, heart and emotions? What is community health/wealth? How can we strengthen ourselves, our connections, and our relations? How can we make better use of time and space? What is next? What are we ready to release and let go of? What are we ready to welcome in?

Delicious local food, Mariachi music, ancient and present knowledge, river walk and nature bath, movement, and zozobra burning.

People’s Future Forum: Human Futures Dinner

An intimate community conversation about our collective future featuring music, collage-making, live scribe poetic reflection, stargazing w/ firepits + cookies + tea + coffee, centered around a collective dinner experience.

Everyone BRINGs ONE INGREDIENT TO SHARE
fresh fruit, green, or vegetable
herb or spice
rice, lentil or grain
Bring what you like
We will work with what comes

The musicians will play as we all cook dinner and then sit down for the meal with guided conversation.

Think about our collective history. What has worked?

How do we maintain things that we value in the community as the area changes and evolves into the future.

Think Technology, Ecology, and Humanity. What is needed? What are the local buildings, structures and public spaces of the future? What are they made of? What do they feel like? What is their purpose?

Spring 2023

Leadville Colorado

Future Town Tour launched during Earth Day weekend, 2023, in the working class town of Leadville, Colorado—one of the highest elevation towns in the United States. The multi-day festival was co-hosted by local non-profit organization Lake County Build a Generation (B.A.G.). B.A.G.’s mission is to organize Lake County to build a healthier community. The festival featured multilingual music acts, poetry, visual artists, stargazing and tarot card reading, performance artists, magicians, and open civic discourse about the future of this mining town, whose changing demographics are younger, more diverse, multilingual, and multiethnic. We also collaborated with C4 (Cloud City Conservation Center) to address local sustainability issues.

Summer 2023

Ft. Garland Colorado

Fort Garland is the site of a Colorado cultural and history museum, and has a military history that severely harmed Black, Mexican, and Native people. (“Buffalo Soldiers” were recently-freed African American slaves who were used to protect pioneers expanding west, which led to displacing and enslaving Native Americans) Conflicting stories of culture, identity, and agency play out here among Valley residents from different towns, and tourists who enter and exit the Valley through Fort Garland.

Summer 2023

Alamosa Colorado

Alamosa is the social, cultural and economic hub of the San Luis Valley. The diverse and rich history includes oral storytelling, poetry on the page, poetic prose, hip-hop, and spoken word. Additionally, mural art, Lowrider culture, Tejano music, DIY arts practices, and Northern New Mexican food traditions play unexpected and underexposed roles in Southern Colorado. Our efforts have largely been focused on the car club, lowrider community and their connection to Chicano arts and culture and civil rights.

Fall 2023

Center Colorado

Center is a tiny community largely made up of farmworkers. Like most of the Valley, there are families who have worked the land for tens of generations, from when the land was part of Mexico, and there are newly-arrived migrants from all over the world. We’ve worked on numerous initiatives with residents and culture-bearers in town, with a primary focus on re-imagining the American pep rally and Friday night football culture. Combining Guatemalan Marimba music with bi-lingual hip-hop, and a heavy focus on food culture, we have been highlighting the importance of who tells what stories, when, and how.

Fall 2023

Walsenburg Colorado

The Future Town Bilingual Creative Circus first came to town in fall 2023 in partnership with the Fox Theater and the Huajatolla Heritage Foundation. The community was invited to the Fox Theater for an evening of traditional food, folklorico dance, performance art, poetry, music, and perspective. Local residents participated in a multigenerational conversation about the past, present, and future of Walsenburg. Featured music included DJ STV, local Tejano band Dynamix, and Denver multi-instrumentalist Felix Fast4Ward. The event also featured a multimedia production of Huerfano County in its years of prosperity, and a pictorial archive of 25 of the Founding Hispano Families in Huerfano County.

The most important thing about this work:
It is completely grounded in fun and culture
