More people in the United States
Live in the suburbs
than in urban and rural areas combined.

People are moving to suburbs because of displacement, immigration, and refugee resettlement programs, making these places hubs of cultural, racial, ethnic, and linguistic diversity.

3 million people live in the Denver Metro Area

At best, these communities can explore innovative solutions to our democratic challenges and reinvent what livable and equitable communities look like.

However, many of these municipalities are not prepared, financially or culturally, to offer services for such a diverse population boom.

  • What is to be done? Regional cooperation? Regional reparations?
  • How can residents with such different experiences and connection to place find workable ways to live together with limited resources?

We think the suburbs are where it’s at!

Eyni, Tumura, Stephanie, Erica, Maryam, and Jane

These women have led our arts-based study of regional equity and potential Civic Reparations in Aurora. We’ve engaged Amharic, Oromo, Somali, Arabic, Turkish, and Spanish speaking residents to better understand how and where they participate in civic life. Using 1-1 interviews, group meetings, conversations at the bus stop, and some larger gatherings, we’ve been civically engaging some of the most traditionally low power residents and creating more opportunities to use their civic power.

In 2024, Suburb Futures started the Aurora Civic House Party initiative.

With these parties, we offer a $500 stipend to people who would like to host their own civically-motivated, community-building house party. Parties can include refreshments, food, and great conversations. Questions? Interested? Check out our frequently asked questions or send an email to jane@warmcookiesoftherevolution.org

The most important thing about this work:
It is completely grounded in fun and culture

Suburb Futures is so much fun - here's proof!

The program name Suburb Futures came from Erica Dorn’s doctoral thesis, Relational Design for Transitions Within US Suburbs, exploring Aurora, Colorado as an example of the complex cultural and civic changes in US suburbs.
